Hagia Sophia Tickets

Stand beneath the dome that defined a thousand years of Christian architecture, trace the gold tesserae of the 13th-century Deesis mosaic, and walk through the Imperial Door once reserved for emperors. Built in 537 AD by Justinian I and now in its third life as both a working mosque and the Hagia Sophia Experience Museum, this is the most layered building on earth. Hagia Sophia, in Istanbul's Sultanahmet district, has stood at the centre of the city since Justinian I inaugurated it in 537 AD. It served as the Byzantine cathedral for nearly a thousand years, became an Ottoman imperial mosque in 1453, was a museum from 1934 to 2020, and since 2024 the upper gallery has been re-opened as the paid Hagia Sophia Experience Museum with a separate entrance for foreign visitors. For planning, see our visitors guide, the latest opening hours and our best time to visit page.

The Deesis Mosaic — the most human face in Byzantine art

On the south wall of the upper gallery, dating to roughly 1261 AD after the Latin occupation of Constantinople ended, the Deesis mosaic shows Christ flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. It is universally regarded as the masterpiece of late Byzantine art — the tesserae are tiny, set at deliberately uneven angles to catch candlelight, and the modelling of Christ's face is extraordinarily naturalistic for its date.

You can only reach the Deesis on the upper gallery via the Hagia Sophia Experience Museum ticket, accessed by a stone ramp originally built so that empresses could reach their viewing balcony on horseback. From the same level you can see the Imperial Door directly below, the dome of Justinian rising 55 metres above the floor, and the four enormous Ottoman calligraphy roundels added in the 19th century.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your visit

How much are Hagia Sophia tickets?
The upper-gallery Hagia Sophia Experience Museum ticket costs €25 for foreign adult visitors. The ground-floor mosque area remains free for all visitors during worship hours. See our free & reduced tickets page for who qualifies for free entry.
Do I need to book in advance?
For the upper gallery, yes — booking is strongly recommended and weekend slots in summer often sell out a day or two ahead. The ground floor does not require a ticket but cannot be visited during prayer times. See our best time to visit page for quieter slots.
Where exactly is Hagia Sophia?
On Sultanahmet Square in the historic peninsula of Istanbul, directly opposite the Blue Mosque. The address is Sultan Ahmet, Ayasofya Meydanı No:1, 34122 Fatih. Tram T1 stops at Sultanahmet, a 2-minute walk away. Full directions are on our visitors guide.
Is it a mosque or a museum?
Both. Since 2020 the ground floor is again a working mosque and free for all visitors during posted hours. Since January 2024 the upper gallery operates as the paid Hagia Sophia Experience Museum with its own foreign-visitor entrance.
How long should I plan for the visit?
Most visitors spend 60–90 minutes inside the upper gallery. Add 30 minutes if you also want to walk around the ground floor. Your timed slot is for entry only — you can stay as long as you like once inside.
What is the dress code?
Because Hagia Sophia is a working mosque, modest dress is required for everyone. Women must cover their hair with a scarf — free scarves are available at the entrance if you forget. Shoulders and knees must be covered. The full list is on our rules & regulations page.
Is Hagia Sophia wheelchair accessible?
The ground floor is fully accessible. The upper gallery is reached only by a stone ramp — there is no lift, and the surface is uneven 6th-century paving. See our accessibility page for full details on the alternative virtual experience for visitors with mobility needs.
Are children free?
Children under 8 enter the upper gallery free of charge, but a free timed-entry ticket is still required for each child — book it in the same order as paying adults. See free & reduced tickets for the full eligibility list.
Can I take photos inside?
Yes — non-flash photography is allowed throughout the upper gallery. On the ground floor, photography is permitted outside prayer times but you should never point a camera at praying worshippers.
Can I combine the visit with the Blue Mosque or Topkapı?
Yes — the Blue Mosque is directly across Sultanahmet Square (3-minute walk) and Topkapı Palace is 5 minutes north. Combo tickets with Topkapı are available; the Blue Mosque is free but closes for prayer five times a day.
